This is a cover for opera songs that got popularized along with Japan’s modernization in the late 19th century. Western symphonic songs were promoted among elites and the newly rich. Hand lettering is done with quite serious tones with black in color. The main figure has strong outlines and shades implying the fierce will of the man.
Takehisa Yumeji 竹久夢二 is one of the great designers from the end of Taisho era to the beginning of Showa era in Japan. He designed nearly 100 covers for Senow Music Sheet and he is also famous for bijin-ga 美人画 (lit. beautiful woman illustration) depicting beauty of women inside out.
